In value terms, Cameroon ($118M), Burkina Faso ($93M) and Niger ($49M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 70% share of the global market. Mali, Togo, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

In terms of the main consuming countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +12.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

China was the largest importer of bambara beans in the world, with the volume of imports recording 1.6K tons, which was near 44% of total imports in 2022. The Dominican Republic (136 tons), India (120 tons), Venezuela (120 tons), Yemen (103 tons), Uganda (93 tons), the UK (79 tons), South Africa (77 tons), El Salvador (73 tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (60 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bambara bean imports into China stood at +64.0%. At the same time, South Africa (+71.7%), Venezuela (+65.8%), Syrian Arab Republic (+62.6%), Uganda (+47.2%), the UK (+28.3%), Botswana (+22.6%), the United States (+4.1%) and El Salvador (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012-2022. India and the Dominican Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lebanon (-6.5%) and Yemen (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+44 p.p.), Botswana (+8.1 p.p.), the United States (+4.3 p.p.), India (+3.3 p.p.), Venezuela (+3.3 p.p.), Uganda (+2.5 p.p.), South Africa (+2.1 p.p.), the UK (+2.1 p.p.), El Salvador (+2 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+1.8 p.p.) and Syrian Arab Republic (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($1.3M) constitutes the largest market for imported bambara beans worldwide, comprising 33% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Venezuela ($351K), with an 8.8% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +54.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Venezuela (+67.1% per year) and the United States (+4.1% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average bambara bean import price stood at $1,087 per ton in 2022, rising by 23% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bambara bean import price increased by +33.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Exports

World Exports of Bambara Beans

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of bambara beans decreased by -10.1% to 4.7K tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 280%. The global exports peaked at 6.6K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bambara bean exports dropped remarkably to $3.6M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt downturn. In value terms, Myanmar ($1.3M) emerged as the largest bambara bean supplier worldwide, comprising 36% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($436K), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.8% share.
