Which Country Consumes the Most Dry Beans in the World?

Global dry bean consumption amounted to 26,580 thousand tonnes in 2015, falling by -1.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global dry bean consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +9% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global dry bean consumption attained its maximum volume of 26,909 thousand tonnes in 2014. From 2015 to 2015, the total dry bean consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Dry Beans Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Myanmar (4,998 thousand tonnes), India (4,987 thousand tonnes), Brazil (3,530 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 49% of total consumption. They were followed by Mexico with a 5% of global consumption share and the United States with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of dry bean consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Myanmar (+7.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Per capita bean (dry) in Myanmar was estimated at 92.74 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 3.51 kg/year. Myanmar was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of bean (dry), followed by Brazil (16.98 kg/year), Mexico (11.50 kg/year), India (3.80 kg/year) and the United States (3.59 kg/year).

In Myanmar, per capita bean (dry) consumption has grown noticably (+6.6% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Myanmar per capita consumption reached 92.74 kg/year as compared with 55.50 kg/year in 2007.
