Which Country Consumes the Most Pulses in the World?

Global pulses consumption amounted to 4,832 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +7.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global pulses consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global pulses consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Pulses Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were India (1,057 thousand tonnes), Russia (566 thousand tonnes), the United Kingdom (305 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 40% of total consumption. They were followed by Poland with a 5% of global consumption share and Mozambique with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of pulses consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by Russia (+35.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of pulses per capita consumption was registered in Mozambique (8.08 kg/year), followed by Poland (6.85 kg/year), the United Kingdom (4.71 kg/year), Russia (3.94 kg/year) and India (0.81 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of pulses was estimated at 1.89 kg/year in 2015.

In Russia, per capita pulses consumption has grown noticably (+34.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Russia per capita consumption reached 8.08 kg/year as compared with 0.36 kg/year in 2007.
