Acrylonitrile Production Process

Acrylonitrile is an important chemical compound used in the production of a variety of products, including acrylic fibers, plastics, resins, and synthetic rubber. The production of acrylonitrile involves several steps that are carried out in a chemical plant.

The main process for acrylonitrile production is the ammoxidation of propylene. This process involves the reaction of propylene, ammonia, and air over a catalyst at high temperatures.

The first step in the process is the preparation of the catalyst. Typically, a mixed metal oxide catalyst is used, which is prepared by calcining a mixture of metal salts. The calcination process involves heating the mixture at high temperatures to drive off any volatile impurities and to activate the catalyst.

Once the catalyst is prepared, the reaction mixture is prepared in a reactor. Propylene, ammonia, and air are fed into the reactor in the desired ratios. The mixture is then heated to the reaction temperature, which is typically around 400-500 degrees Celsius. The reaction is exothermic and is carried out at high pressure.

Inside the reactor, the propylene and ammonia react with the oxygen from the air over the catalyst to form acrylonitrile. The reaction is highly selective, with the majority of the propylene being converted to acrylonitrile. However, side reactions can occur, leading to the formation of unwanted by-products.

After the reaction is complete, the reaction mixture is cooled and passed through a series of separation processes to isolate the acrylonitrile. This typically involves distillation, where the reaction mixture is heated to separate the different components based on their boiling points.

Once the acrylonitrile is separated, it is further purified through a purification process. This involves removing any impurities, such as water, catalyst residues, and by-products, to obtain pure acrylonitrile.

The final product, pure acrylonitrile, can then be used for further processing to produce various end products. These end products include acrylic fibers, plastics, resins, and synthetic rubber, which have a wide range of applications in industries such as textiles, automotive, and construction.
