Industrial Manufacturing Process of Acrylonitrile

Acrylonitrile is a key raw material used in the production of various polymers, such as acrylic fibers, ABS plastics, and synthetic rubbers. The industrial manufacturing process of acrylonitrile involves several steps, starting from the production of propylene as the primary raw material.

The process begins with the steam cracking of hydrocarbons, such as crude oil or natural gas, to produce ethylene and propylene. Propylene is then purified through various separation techniques, such as fractional distillation or solvent extraction.

Once purified, propylene is mixed with ammonia and passed over a catalyst in a reactor to undergo the ammoxidation reaction. This reaction involves the simultaneous presence of propylene, ammonia, and air in the presence of a catalyst, typically composed of bismuth molybdate supported on silica or alumina.

The ammoxidation reaction results in the formation of acrylonitrile, along with byproducts such as carbon dioxide and water. The gaseous reaction mixture is then cooled and sent to an absorption column, where acrylonitrile is selectively absorbed using a suitable solvent.

The acrylonitrile-rich solvent is then distilled to separate acrylonitrile from impurities and byproducts. The purified acrylonitrile is further subjected to additional treatments, such as hydrogenation or oxidation, to remove any remaining impurities and ensure the desired product quality.

After purification, the acrylonitrile is typically stored and transported as a liquid or dissolved in a solvent to prevent polymerization or degradation. It is then used as a feedstock in various polymerization processes to produce polymers like acrylic fibers, ABS plastics, and synthetic rubbers.

The industrial manufacturing process of acrylonitrile requires careful control of reaction conditions, catalyst selection, and purification techniques to ensure high product yield and quality. The process also needs to comply with safety and environmental regulations to minimize the impact on the environment and human health.
