In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the spinach output was China (23,108 thousand tonnes), accounting for 91% of global production. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Japan with a share of 1%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of spinach producton in China stood at +6.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+1.9% per year) and Japan (-2.1% per year).

Global Spinach Production

Global spinach production amounted to 25,320 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +4.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global spinach output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +5.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +17% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global spinach production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global spinach production was primarily driven by popularity of healthy eating and population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the spinach output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world spinach harvested area amounted to 980 thousand ha in 2015, which was 3.2% more than the previous year figure. The spinach harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +2.3% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total spinach harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand over the globe.
