Spinach Market Size in Greece

The Greek spinach market rose sharply to $X in 2020, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2020, overseas shipments of spinach decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, spinach exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria (X tonnes) was the main destination for spinach exports from Greece, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, spinach exports to Bulgaria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tonnes), threefold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bulgaria amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+X% per year) and Turkey (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for spinach exported from Greece were Turkey ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Romania ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports.

Turkey (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average spinach export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+X% per year), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Greece

In 2020, imports of spinach into Greece declined markedly to X tonnes, waning by -X% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, spinach imports shrank modestly to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Italy (X tonnes) constituted the largest spinach supplier to Greece, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, spinach imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tonnes), threefold. Belgium (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+X% per year) and Belgium (-X% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per tonne), while the price for Belgium ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
