Which Country Imports the Most Plastic Office Or School Supplies in the World?

In 2016, approx. 19M tonnes of office supply were imported worldwide- picking up by 9% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2007 to 2016- however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015, when imports increased by 11% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global office supply imports reached its maximum volume in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, office supply imports totaled $66B in 2016. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2007 to 2016- however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Global office supply import peaked of $67B in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Office Supply Imports By Country

China (6.2M tonnes), and Mexico (4.2M tonnes) represented roughly 55% of total imports of office supply in 2016. The U.S. (819K tonnes), Germany (747K tonnes), the UK (465K tonnes), Italy (435K tonnes), Japan (426K tonnes), France (411K tonnes), and Spain (316K tonnes) held the weak share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of office supply imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Mexico (+23.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($9.2B), Germany ($5.2B) and Mexico ($4.2B) appeared as the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2016, together comprising 28% of global imports.China, Japan, France, the UK, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

China (+5.4% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of office supply imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Office Supply Import Prices By Country

The average office supply import price stood at $3,469 per tonne in 2016, reducing by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, office supply import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when import increased by 11% year-to-year. Global office supply import peaked of $4,277 per tonne in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was the U.S. ($11 per kg), while China ($506 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of office supply import prices was attained by China (+5.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
