Which Country Exports the Most Woven Fabrics Of Man-Made Filaments and Staple Fibers in the World?

In 2016, the amount of woven fabric exported worldwide totaled 2.5M tonnes, descending by -6.7% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, woven fabric exports decreased by -12.8% against its level of 2013. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when exports increased by 58% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global woven fabric exports reached its maximum volume of 2.9M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, woven fabric exports stood at $23B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global woven fabric export peaked of $25B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Woven Fabric Exports By Country

China (1.3M tonnes) prevails in woven fabric exports structure, accounting for 1.3M tonnes, which was approx. 52% of total exports in 2016. United Arab Emirates (192K tonnes) occupied a 8% share (based on tonnes) of global woven fabric exports, which put it in second place, following South Korea (6%). Turkey (97K tonnes), Indonesia (91K tonnes), Germany (65K tonnes), Malaysia (51K tonnes), the U.S. (45K tonnes), Japan (43K tonnes), and Thailand (39K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to woven fabric exports from China stood at nan%. At the same time, Turkey (+2.3%), and Thailand (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of nan% from 2007-2016. Malaysia, and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-1.6%), Indonesia (-3.3%), the U.S. (-3.5%), United Arab Emirates (-3.6%), and Japan (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. United Arab Emirates (3%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($11B) remains the largest woven fabric supplier in the world, making up 50% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by South Korea ($1.8B), with the share of 8% of global exports. It was followed by United Arab Emirates, with the share of 4%.

In China, woven fabric exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+1.3% per year) and United Arab Emirates (-0.1% per year).

Woven Fabric Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for woven fabric amounted to $8,990 per tonne, rising by 5% against the previous year. In general, woven fabric export price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011, when it surged by 13% y-o-y. Global woven fabric export peaked of $13 per kg in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Japan ($22 per kg), while Malaysia ($2,509 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of woven fabric export prices was attained by Indonesia (+3.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
