Which Country Exports the Most Household Washing and Drying Machines in the World?

In 2016, the amount of washing machine exported worldwide stood at 3.2M tonnes, increasing by 10% against the previous year level. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when export increased by 20% year-to-year. Over the period under review, global washing machine exports reached its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, washing machine exports stood at $13B in 2016. Overall, washing machine exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global washing machine export peaked of $15B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Washing Machine Exports By Country

In 2016, China (893K tonnes), distantly followed by Poland (420K tonnes), Turkey (393K tonnes), Thailand (217K tonnes), Italy (211K tonnes), South Korea (165K tonnes), and Slovakia (161K tonnes) represented the key exporters of washing machine, together creating 77% of total exports. Germany (126K tonnes), Russia (83K tonnes), the U.S. (73K tonnes), and Mexico (68K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Russia (+24.5%), Poland (+13.3%), Turkey (+6.1%), Thailand (+5.3%), and Italy (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2007-2016. Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mexico (-3.1%), the U.S. (-3.3%), South Korea (-3.6%), and Germany (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (7%), and South Korea (2%) increased significantly, the share of Russia (-2.2%), Thailand (-2.5%), Turkey (-5.1%), Poland (-8.9%), and China (-18.4%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($3.8B) remains the largest washing machine supplier in the world, making up 29% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Poland ($1.2B), with the share of 9% of global exports. It was followed by South Korea, with the share of 8%.

In China, washing machine exports stood at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Poland (+7.0% per year) and South Korea (-1.1% per year).

Washing Machine Export Prices By Country

The average washing machine export price stood at $4,088 per tonne in 2016, shrinking by -10.6% against the previous year. Overall, washing machine export price continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2012, when export price increased by 5% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average washing machine export price reached its maximum level of $5,767 per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was Mexico ($6,745 per tonne), while Turkey ($2,438 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of washing machine export prices was attained by Mexico (+14.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
