Which Country Exports the Most Cotton Woven Fabrics in the World?

Global cotton fabric exports amounted to 1.2M tonnes in 2016, going up by 22% against the previous year figure. In general, cotton fabric exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when export increased by 27% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global cotton fabric exports reached its maximum volume of 1.5M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports totaled $13B in 2016. In general, cotton fabric exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global cotton fabric export peaked of $17B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Cotton Fabric Exports By Country

China (770K tonnes) prevails in cotton fabric exports structure, recording 770K tonnes, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2016. India (82K tonnes) occupied a 7% share (based on tonnes) of global cotton fabric exports, which put it in second place, following Pakistan (6%). The following exporters - Turkey (37K tonnes), Germany (28K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (22K tonnes), and Thailand (19K tonnes) together made up 9% of total exports.

China was also the fastest growing in terms of the cotton fabric exports, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, India (+6.5%), Turkey (+2.2%), and Pakistan (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Germany (-2.6%), Thailand (-7.5%), and China, Hong Kong SAR (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China, Hong Kong SAR (9%), and Thailand (2%) increased significantly, the share of India (-2.9%), and China (-30.0%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($7.9B) remains the largest cotton fabric supplier in the world, making up 59% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by India ($966M), with the share of 7% of global exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with the share of 4%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of cotton fabric exports in China stood at +6.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: India (+5.9% per year) and Pakistan (-1.3% per year).

Cotton Fabric Export Prices By Country

The average cotton fabric export price stood at $11 per kg in 2016, going down by -22.3% against the previous year. In general, cotton fabric export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when export increased by 34% year-to-year. Global cotton fabric export peaked of $14 per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($14 per kg), while Turkey ($7,571 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of cotton fabric export prices was attained by China, Hong Kong SAR (+5.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
