Which Country Exports the Most Ceramic Tiles in the World?

In 2016, the amount of ceramic tile exported worldwide stood at 11M tonnes, falling by -8.2% against the previous year level. Overall, ceramic tile exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 102% from the previous year level. Global ceramic tile export peaked of 13M tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, ceramic tile exports amounted to $5B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2016: the total exports value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, ceramic tile exports decreased by -26.2% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, global ceramic tile exports attained its maximum level of $6.7B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Ceramic Tile Exports By Country

China (7M tonnes) represented the major exporter of ceramic tile in the world, amounting to 7M tonnes, which was near 61% of total exports in 2016. It was distantly followed by Italy (2.3M tonnes), comprising 20% share of total ceramic tile exports. The following exporters - Germany (279K tonnes), Spain (225K tonnes), and Poland (222K tonnes) held approx. 6% of total exports, each.

China was also the fastest growing in terms of the ceramic tile exports, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Spain (+13.7%), Germany (+2.7%), and Italy (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Italy (-2.7%), and China (-44.8%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($1.9B), China ($1.8B) and Spain ($216M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, together accounting for 78% of global exports.

China (+5.5% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of ceramic tile exports, among the main exporting countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ceramic Tile Export Prices By Country

The average ceramic tile export price stood at $436 per tonne in 2016, waning by -18.7% against the previous year. Overall, ceramic tile export price continues to indicate a deep decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when it surged by 11% y-o-y. In that year, average ceramic tile export price attained its maximum level of $759 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average ceramic tile export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Spain ($957 per tonne), while China ($252 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of ceramic tile export prices was attained by Poland (+1.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
