Which Country Imports the Most Ceramic Tiles in the World?

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2007 to 2016; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when import increased by 13% against the previous year level. Global ceramic sanitary ware import peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, ceramic sanitary ware imports amounted to $5.1B in 2016. Overall, ceramic sanitary ware imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Global ceramic sanitary ware import peaked of $5.4B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Ceramic Sanitary Ware Imports By Country

In 2016, the U.S. (481K tonnes), distantly followed by South Korea (144K tonnes), Germany (142K tonnes), and the UK (140K tonnes) represented the major importers of ceramic sanitary ware, together creating 34% of total imports. France (113K tonnes), Spain (97K tonnes), Canada (89K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (83K tonnes), Italy (72K tonnes), Nigeria (70K tonnes), Australia (59K tonnes), and Japan (44K tonnes) followed a long way behind this figure.

Imports into the U.S. increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2007 to 2016. At the same time, Nigeria (+17.4%), South Korea (+8.5%), Saudi Arabia (+5.8%), Australia (+5.7%), Germany (+4.1%), and Canada (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2007;2016. Japan, Italy, and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (;1.3%), and Spain (;5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (3%) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Germany, Nigeria, the U.S., and South Korea saw its share reduced by ;1.6%, ;2.0%, ;2.4%, and ;2.8% from 2007 to 2016, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the U.S. ($1.1B) constitutes the largest market for imported ceramic sanitary ware worldwide, making up 22% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($357M), with the share of 7% of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with the share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value of ceramic sanitary ware imports in the U.S. expanded at +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+3.5% per year) and the UK (;2.7% per year).

Ceramic Sanitary Ware Import Prices By Country

The average ceramic sanitary ware import price stood at $1,920 per tonne in 2016, waning by ;5.5% against the previous year. Overall, ceramic sanitary ware import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when import increased by 8% against the previous year level. In that year, average ceramic sanitary ware import price reached its maximum level of $2,319 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average ceramic sanitary ware import price failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2016, the country with the highest import prices was Germany ($2,508 per tonne), while Nigeria ($446 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of ceramic sanitary ware import prices was attained by Japan (+3.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2007 to 2016- the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed over the period under review. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when imports increased by 9% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, global ceramic tile imports reached its maximum volume of 22M tonnes in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

In value terms, ceramic tile imports stood at $4.1B in 2016. Overall, it indicated a noticeable expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. Ceramic Tile Imports By Country

China (8.5M tonnes) represented the largest importer of ceramic tile in the world, resulting at 8.5M tonnes, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2016. It was distantly followed by Italy (2.3M tonnes), mixed up 11% share of total ceramic tile imports. Indonesia (928K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (511K tonnes), the U.S. (490K tonnes), the Philippines (484K tonnes), Germany (410K tonnes), Cambodia (385K tonnes), and France (343K tonnes) occupied the minor share of total imports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. At the same time, the Philippines (+49.1%), Cambodia (+35.6%), Saudi Arabia (+32.5%), Indonesia (+29.7%), and Germany (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +49.1% from 2007-2016. Italy, and the U.S. experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cambodia (-1.7%), Saudi Arabia (-2.2%), the Philippines (-2.2%), and Indonesia (-3.9%) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest ceramic tile markets worldwide were the U.S. ($282M), France ($252M) and Germany ($237M), with a combined 19% share of global imports.Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Italy and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

Cambodia (+33.6% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of ceramic tile imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 9 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ceramic Tile Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for ceramic tile amounted to $191 per tonne, coming down by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, ceramic tile import price continues to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when import price increased by 12% year-to-year. Global ceramic tile import peaked of $218 per tonne in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was France ($735 per tonne), while China ($2 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of ceramic tile import prices was attained by France (+5.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
