Which Country Exports the Most Aluminium Bars in the World?

In 2016, approx. 4.7M tonnes of aluminium bar were exported worldwide; growing by 5% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010, when export increased by 19% from the previous year level. Global aluminium bar export peaked in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium bar exports totaled $16B in 2016. Overall, aluminium bar exports continue to indicate a mild drop. Global aluminium bar export peaked of $18B in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Aluminium Bar Exports By Country

China (1.2M tonnes) represented the main exporter of aluminium bar in the world, amounting to 1.2M tonnes, which was approx. 26% of total exports in 2016. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (293K tonnes), Germany (262K tonnes), Spain (242K tonnes), and the U.S. (219K tonnes), together generating 22% share of total aluminium bar exports. Italy (199K tonnes), Turkey (155K tonnes), Austria (131K tonnes), Belgium (122K tonnes), Bahrain (119K tonnes), Greece (99K tonnes), and Canada (88K tonnes) took the minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium bar exports from China stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Greece (+8.8%), the U.S. (+6.4%), Spain (+6.0%), and Turkey (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2007-2016. Italy, Germany, and Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Austria (-1.3%), Belgium (-3.1%), Mozambique (-4.1%), and Bahrain (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bahrain (4%), and Mozambique (3%) increased significantly, the share of the U.S. (-2.0%), Spain (-2.1%), and China (-7.6%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($3.8B) remains the largest aluminium bar supplier in the world, making up 23% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($1.5B), with the share of 9% of global exports. It was followed by the U.S., with the share of 6%.

In China, aluminium bar exports stood at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: Germany (-2.1% per year) and the U.S. (+5.4% per year).

Aluminium Bar Export Prices By Country

The average aluminium bar export price stood at $3,440 per tonne in 2016, coming down by -12.3% against the previous year. Overall, aluminium bar export price continues to indicate a moderate drop. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, an increase of 11% against the previous year level. In that year, average aluminium bar export price reached its maximum level of $4,820 per tonne. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average aluminium bar export price stood at a somewhat lower level.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was Germany ($5,657 per tonne), while Mozambique ($1,141 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of aluminium bar export prices was attained by China (+0.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
