U.S. Wood Preservation Price Peaks at $1,303 per Ton

U.S. Wood Preservation Export Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the wood preservation price amounted to $1,303 per ton (FOB, US), increasing by 8.3% against the previous month. Over the period from April 2022 to April 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when the average export price increased by 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in April 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($6,610 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($570 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Wood Preservation Exports

After three months of growth, overseas shipments of wood preservation decreased by -8.9% to 22K tons in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 with an increase of 52% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 35K tons. From September 2022 to April 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood preservation exports fell slightly to $28M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 with an increase of 37% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $38M. From September 2022 to April 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

U.S. Wood Preservation Exports by Country

Jamaica (3.6K tons), Mexico (3.3K tons) and Bahamas (1.8K tons) were the main destinations of wood preservation exports from the United States, together accounting for 40% of total exports. Canada, the Dominican Republic, China, Cayman Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Haiti, Barbados, Belize, Peru and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($9.1M) remains the key foreign market for wood preservation exports from the United States, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($3.6M), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Jamaica, with an 11% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Canada was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+0.3% per month) and Jamaica (+18.9% per month).
