Turkey's Export of Frozen Fruits and Vegetables Surges Remarkably to $30M in July 2023

Turkey Frozen Fruits And Vegetables Exports

In July 2023, shipments abroad of frozen fruits and vegetables increased by 18% to 15K tons, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when exports increased by 44% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 31K tons. From January 2023 to July 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen fruits and vegetables exports totaled $30M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate modest growth. Exports by Country

Russia (3.2K tons) was the main destination for frozen fruits and vegetables exports from Turkey, accounting for a 21% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen fruits and vegetables exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (1.6K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (1.3K tons), with an 8.3% share.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia totaled -2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Germany (+0.5% per month) and the United States (-2.7% per month).

In value terms, the largest markets for frozen fruits and vegetables exported from Turkey were Russia ($4.6M), the United States ($4M) and the UK ($3.2M), together accounting for 40% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +7.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Frozen potatoes (5.9K tons), frozen vegetables other than potato and corn (5.4K tons) and frozen fruit and nuts (3.8K tons) were the main products of frozen fruits and vegetables exports from Turkey, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in frozen vegetables other than potato and corn (with a CAGR of +0.5%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, the most traded types of frozen fruits and vegetables in Turkey were frozen vegetables other than potato and corn ($11M), frozen fruit and nuts ($10M) and frozen potatoes ($8.5M), together comprising 100% of total exports.

In terms of the main product categories, frozen vegetables other than potato and corn, with a CAGR of +2.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In July 2023, the frozen fruits and vegetables price stood at $1,956 per ton (FOB, Turkey), which is down by -3% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,198 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,203 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($1,217 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
