In October 2023, overseas purchases of frozen fruits and vegetables decreased by -8.3% to 25K tons, falling for the second month in a row after two months of growth. In general, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when imports increased by 32% month-to-month.

In value terms, frozen fruits and vegetables imports fell to $35M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports by Country

Argentina (9K tons), Belgium (7.6K tons) and the Netherlands (2.7K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fruits and vegetables imports to Brazil, together accounting for 78% of total imports.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in Argentina (with a CAGR of -2.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Argentina ($15M), Belgium ($9.5M) and the Netherlands ($4.1M) constituted the largest frozen fruits and vegetables suppliers to Brazil, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Argentina, with a CAGR of -0.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Imports by Type

In October 2023, frozen potatoes (20K tons) constituted the largest type of frozen fruits and vegetables supplied to Brazil, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen potatoes exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, frozen vegetables other than potato and corn (2.8K tons), sevenfold. Frozen fruit and nuts (2.2K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.7% share.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen potatoes totaled -3.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen vegetables other than potato and corn (-0.6% per month) and frozen fruit and nuts (+10.8% per month).

In value terms, frozen potatoes ($28M) constituted the largest type of frozen fruits and vegetables supplied to Brazil, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen vegetables other than potato and corn ($4.4M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen fruit and nuts, with a 7.5% share.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the frozen fruits and vegetables price stood at $1,422 per ton (CIF, Brazil), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Over the period from October 2022 to October 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 8.3% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,486 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to October 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Spain ($1,632 per ton) and Argentina ($1,612 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($1,210 per ton) and Belgium ($1,250 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
