Thailand's Sewing Thread Price Drops to $8,677/Ton

Thailand Sewing Thread Import Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the sewing thread price stood at $8,677 per ton (CIF, Thailand), falling by -2.1% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 24% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $11,176 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($16,953 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($5,713 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+19.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Thailand Sewing Thread Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was sewing thread of man-made filaments, whether or not put up for retail sale ($12,342 per ton), while the price for sewing thread of man-made staple fibres, whether or not put up for retail sale totaled $3,622 per ton.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by sewing thread of man-made filaments, whether or not put up for retail sale (+2.8%).

Thailand Sewing Thread Imports

In June 2023, approximately 196 tons of sewing thread of man-made filaments or staple fibers were imported into Thailand; which is down by -18.7% compared with May 2023. In general, imports recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 114% month-to-month.

In value terms, sewing thread imports fell dramatically to $1.7M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, imports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when imports increased by 65% month-to-month.

Sewing thread of man-made filaments, whether or not put up for retail sale (114 tons) and sewing thread of man-made staple fibres, whether or not put up for retail sale (82 tons) were the main products of sewing thread imports to Thailand.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in sewing thread of man-made staple fibres, whether or not put up for retail sale (with a CAGR of +0.5%).

In value terms, sewing thread of man-made filaments, whether or not put up for retail sale ($1.4M) constituted the largest type of sewing thread supplied to Thailand, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by sewing thread of man-made staple fibres, whether or not put up for retail sale ($298K), with an 18% share of total imports.

In June 2023, China (137 tons) constituted the largest sewing thread supplier to Thailand, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, sewing thread imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (21 tons), sixfold. Japan (13 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.8% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-2.5% per month) and Japan (+3.9% per month).

In value terms, China ($1M) constituted the largest supplier of sewing thread to Thailand, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($226K), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with an 8.7% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from China amounted to -4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Japan (+2.8% per month) and the UK (-0.5% per month).
