European Sweetened Condensed Milk Exports Gain Momentum

In 2020, exports of sweetened condensed milk in the EU jumped by +5.2% to 252K tonnes or $525M in value terms. Belgium and the Netherlands remain the largest exporters of sweetened condensed milk in the EU. Belgium saw a -4.8% drop in terms of volume of supplies last year. France and Lithuania managed to double their exports in physical terms, while other major European suppliers recorded moderate growth. Last year, the average export price for sweetened condensed milk in the EU reduced by -6.6% against the previous year.
Sweetened Condensed Milk Exports in the EU
In 2020, exports of condensed or evaporated milk (sweetened) in the EU rose rapidly to 252K tonnes, picking up by +5.2% compared with the previous year. In value terms, sweetened condensed and evaporated milk exports contracted to $525M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
Belgium (68K tonnes) and the Netherlands (65K tonnes) represented roughly 53% of total exports of condensed or evaporated milk (sweetened) in 2020. Spain (40K tonnes) occupied the next position in the ranking, followed by Germany (36K tonnes) and France (13K tonnes). All these countries together took approx. 35% share of total exports.
In 2020, France and Lithuania saw a twofold increase in export volume (in physical terms). Poland (+14.2%), the Netherlands (+3.5%), Spain (+9.6%) and Germany (+5.3%) featured more modest paces of growth, while the supplies from Belgium reduced (-4.8%).
In value terms, the largest sweetened condensed and evaporated milk supplying countries in the EU were Belgium ($168M), the Netherlands ($137M) and Spain ($77M), with a combined 73% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, France, Lithuania and Poland, which together accounted for a further 23%.
In 2020, the export price for condensed or evaporated milk (sweetened) in the EU amounted to $2,084 per tonne, reducing by -6.6% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Belgium ($2,453 per tonne) and the Netherlands ($2,097 per tonne), while France ($1,661 per tonne) and Poland ($1,669 per tonne) were amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
