Rapeseed Oil Price Continues its Upward Trend, Reaching $2,046 per Ton

U.S. Rapeseed Oil Import Price per Ton July 2022

In July 2022, the rapeseed oil price per ton stood at $2,046, with an increase of 1.8% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to July 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 an increase of 6% m-o-m. The import price peaked in July 2022.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Canada.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Canada amounted to +3.2% per month.

U.S. Rapeseed Oil Import Prices by Type

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In July 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($2,314 per ton) and vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($2,162 per ton), while the price for vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($1,826 per ton) and vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($2,093 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (+4.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Rapeseed Oil Imports

In July 2022, supplies from abroad of rapeseed oil increased by 1.3% to 167K tons, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% over the period from January 2022 to July 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 22% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 181K tons. From April 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rapeseed oil imports amounted to $342M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.0% from January 2022 to July 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in July 2022.

U.S. Rapeseed Oil Imports by Type

In July 2022, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (134K tons) constituted the largest type of rapeseed oil supplied to the United States, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (31K tons), fourfold. Vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (1.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1% share.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (+15.2% per month) and vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (-0.1% per month).

In value terms, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($280M) constituted the largest type of rapeseed oil supplied to the United States, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($57M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude, with a 1.1% share.

U.S. Rapeseed Oil Imports by Country

In July 2022, Canada (163K tons) was the main supplier of rapeseed oil to the United States, accounting for a approximately 98% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +2.7%.

In value terms, Canada ($334M) constituted the largest supplier of rapeseed oil to the United States.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada totaled +5.9%.
