Qatar's Soybean Oil Price Drops 3% to $2,236/Ton

Qatar Soybean Oil Import Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the soybean oil price stood at $2,236 per ton (CIF, Qatar), reducing by -3.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 an increase of 39% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,004 per ton. From July 2022 to January 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,855 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($1,915 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Qatar Soybean Oil Import Prices by Type

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In January 2023, the product with the highest price was crude soybean oil ($2,855 per ton), while the price for refined soybean oil and its fractions amounted to $2,174 per ton.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by crude soybean oil (+2.2%).

Qatar Soybean Oil Imports

Soybean oil imports into Qatar dropped significantly to 53 tons in January 2023, with a decrease of -60% against December 2022 figures. In general, imports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 with an increase of 218% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 252 tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to January 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soybean oil imports contracted dramatically to $117K (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 with an increase of 215% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 562 tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to January 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Qatar Soybean Oil Imports by Type

In January 2023, refined soybean oil and its fractions (48 tons) was the main type of soybean oil supplied to Qatar, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, refined soybean oil and its fractions exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, crude soybean oil (4.8 tons), tenfold.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of refined soybean oil and its fractions stood at -6.1%.

In value terms, refined soybean oil and its fractions ($104K) constituted the largest type of soybean oil supplied to Qatar, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by crude soybean oil ($14K), with a 12% share of total imports.

Qatar Soybean Oil Imports by Country

Canada (26 tons), Brazil (21 tons) and the United States (4.8 tons) were the main suppliers of soybean oil imports to Qatar.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Canada ($63K), Brazil ($41K) and the United States ($14K) were the largest soybean oil suppliers to Qatar, together comprising 99.9% of total imports.

Canada, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
