Qatar Sees a 6% Rise in Imports, Reaching $1.9M in October 2023

MDF imports into Qatar stood at 4.9K cubic meters in October 2023, almost unchanged from September 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 with an increase of 138% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 9.6K cubic meters in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, MDF imports expanded markedly to $1.9M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when imports increased by 81% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 3.5M cubic meters in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.Qatar MDF Imports By Country (Thousand USD)

Imports by Country

In October 2023, Thailand (2.6K cubic meters) constituted the largest MDF supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, MDF imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (1.1K cubic meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (751 cubic meters), with a 15% share.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Thailand amounted to -8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (+1.1% per month) and Malaysia (-2.9% per month).

In value terms, Thailand ($906K), China ($509K) and Malaysia ($225K) constituted the largest MDF suppliers to Qatar, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Turkey lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 7.4%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +4.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports by Type

In October 2023, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (4K cubic meters) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to Qatar, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (813 cubic meters), fivefold.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm stood at -4.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (-8.1% per month) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (-18.0% per month).

In value terms, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($1.6M) constituted the largest type of MDF supplied to Qatar, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($311K), with a 16% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the mdf price stood at $391 per cubic meter (CIF, Qatar), picking up by 5.3% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 28% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $470K per thousand cubic meters. From December 2022 to October 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($544 per cubic meter), while the price for Malaysia ($299 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
