Price of MDF Surges to $325 for Each Cubic Meter in Brazil

Brazil MDF Export Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the mdf price amounted to $325 per cubic meter (FOB, Brazil), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 15% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $452K per thousand cubic meters. From January 2023 to June 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($413 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Mexico stood at $261 per cubic meter.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (-1.6%).

Brazil MDF Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied somewhat for the major types of exported product. In June 2023, the product with the highest price was medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($377 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($294 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (-1.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.

Brazil MDF Exports

In June 2023, the amount of MDF exported from Brazil reached 58K cubic meters, growing by 10% on May 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when exports increased by 52% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 103K cubic meters in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, MDF exports expanded significantly to $19M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 40% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 44M cubic meters in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brazil MDF Exports by Type

Medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm (31K cubic meters) was the largest type of MDF exported from Brazil, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm exceeded the volume of the second product type, medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (14K cubic meters), twofold.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm stood at -4.5%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm (-7.2% per month) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm (-1.3% per month).

In value terms, the most traded types of MDF in Brazil were medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness over 9 mm ($9.2M), medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness under 5 mm ($4.9M) and medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm ($4.6M).

Medium density fibreboard (MDF) of thickness from 5 to 9 mm, with a CAGR of -3.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

Brazil MDF Exports by Country

Mexico (14K cubic meters), the United States (12K cubic meters) and the UK (3.5K cubic meters) were the main destinations of MDF exports from Brazil, together comprising 52% of total exports. The Dominican Republic, Colombia, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Paraguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Tanzania and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for MDF exported from Brazil were the United States ($5.1M), Mexico ($3.7M) and the UK ($1.1M), with a combined 53% share of total exports. The Dominican Republic, Colombia, Paraguay, Portugal, Poland, Bolivia, Spain, Ecuador, Peru and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
