Whey Price in the Netherlands Rises to $910 per Ton After Two Consecutive Months of Increase
Netherlands Whey Import Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the whey price amounted to $910 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), standing approximately at the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 115% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $920 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Austria ($1,449 per ton), while the price for Poland ($726 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Whey Imports
In February 2023, imports of whey into the Netherlands contracted slightly to 40K tons, which is down by -4.9% compared with January 2023 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 with an increase of 69% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 112K tons. From August 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whey imports fell modestly to $37M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports saw a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 20% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $60M. From April 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Netherlands Whey Imports by Country
In February 2023, Germany (19K tons) constituted the largest whey supplier to the Netherlands, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, whey imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (6.7K tons), threefold. France (5K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to -4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-0.7% per month) and France (+3.2% per month).
In value terms, Germany ($15M) constituted the largest supplier of whey to the Netherlands, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($6.9M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Germany stood at -2.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-2.2% per month) and France (+1.1% per month).
