U.S. Maize Import Price per Ton May 2022
In May 2022, the maize price per ton amounted to $875 (CIF, US), approximately reflecting the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in Apr 2022 when the average import price increased by 7% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $908 per ton in Jan 2022; however, from Feb 2022 to May 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($1,990 per ton), while the price for Costa Rica ($716 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Maize Imports
In May 2022, approx. 27K tons of maize (green) were imported into the United States; falling by -19.8% compared with the month before. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 8.2% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 50K tons. From Apr 2022 to May 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, maize imports dropped remarkably to $24M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. Overall, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The smallest decline of -1.2% was in Mar 2022. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $42M in Jan 2022; however, from Feb 2022 to May 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Maize Imports by Country
In May 2022, Mexico (22K tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to the United States, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Costa Rica (2.4K tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Honduras (1.6K tons), with a 5.8% share.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Mexico stood at -15.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (+10.6% per month) and Honduras (-2.4% per month).
In value terms, Mexico ($18M) constituted the largest supplier of maize to the United States, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($1.7M), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Honduras, with a 7% share.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Mexico amounted to -17.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (+14.7% per month) and Honduras (+4.5% per month).
