Transmission Shaft Price in Italy Falls 5% to $11.8 per kg

Italy Transmission Shaft Export Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the transmission shaft price amounted to $11,835 per ton (FOB, Italy), waning by -4.9% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.9% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $12,443 per ton in December 2022, and then declined modestly in the following month.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($14,216 per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($9,082 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Italy Transmission Shaft Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In January 2023, the product with the highest price was bearing housings not incorporating ball or roller bearings, plain shaft bearings ($21,645 per ton), while the average price for exports of chain; articulated link, roller, of iron or steel ($6,126 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: bearing housing without ball bearing (+2.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Italy Transmission Shaft Exports

In January 2023, the amount of transmission shafts and cranks, bearing housings and plain shaft bearings, gears and gearing and articulated link chain exported from Italy stood at 26K tons, growing by 6.4% on December 2022 figures. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% over the period from January 2022 to January 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 with an increase of 65% against the previous month.

In value terms, transmission shaft exports reached $309M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% over the period from January 2022 to January 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 with an increase of 50% against the previous month.

Italy Transmission Shaft Exports by Type

Gearboxes and speed changers (13K tons) was the largest type of transmission shaft exported from Italy, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, gearboxes and speed changers exceeded the volume of the second product type, cranks and crankshafts (3.8K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by flywheels and pulleys (3.7K tons), with a 14% share.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of gearboxes and speed changers totaled +1.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: cranks and crankshafts (+1.0% per month) and flywheels and pulleys (+0.6% per month).

In value terms, gearboxes and speed changers ($180M) remains the largest type of transmission shaft exported from Italy, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by cranks and crankshafts ($31M), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by flywheels and pulleys, with a 10% share.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of gearboxes and speed changers stood at +1.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: cranks and crankshafts (+0.3% per month) and flywheels and pulleys (+0.7% per month).

Italy Transmission Shaft Exports by Country

Germany (4.7K tons), France (3.5K tons) and the United States (2.6K tons) were the main destinations of transmission shaft exports from Italy, with a combined 41% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Spain, Poland, the UK, Brazil, Austria, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for transmission shaft exported from Italy were Germany ($56M), the United States ($37M) and France ($31M), together accounting for 40% of total exports. Belgium, the UK, Brazil, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Brazil, with a CAGR of +3.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
