American Exports of In-Vitro Diagnostic Substances Gain Momentum

American exports of in-vitro diagnostic substances reached $10.3B, hitting a record high during the past decade. Germany, China, Netherlands and Canada constitute the largest importers of in-vitro diagnostic substances from the U.S. The average export price for in-vitro diagnostic substances rose by +11% y-o-y to $20,116 per tonne last year.

In 2020, the amount of in-vitro diagnostic substances exported from the U.S. rose sharply to 514K tonnes, with an increase of +10% compared with the previous year's figure. In value terms, in-vitro diagnostic substance exports skyrocketed by +22.1% to $10.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.

Germany (112K tonnes) was the leading destination for in-vitro diagnostic substance exports from the U.S., accounting for 22% of total exports. Moreover, in-vitro diagnostic substance exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (39K tonnes), threefold. Canada (35K tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.

In 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume sent to Germany amounted to +29.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-28.4% per year) and Canada (+21.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for in-vitro diagnostic substance exported from the U.S. were Germany ($1.6B), China ($1.2B) and the Netherlands ($1B), together accounting for 37% of total exports.

The average export price for in-vitro diagnostic substances stood at $20,116 per tonne in 2020, increasing by +11% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands, while the average price for exports to Colombia was amongst the lowest.
