Moldova and Uzbekistan Emerge as Fastest-Growing Dried Prune Exporters

The world trade in dried prunes is estimated at $450 million, or 180 thousand tonnes. Recently, the market has seen noticeable shifts among second-tier suppliers. Although Chile remains the largest dried prune exporter, Moldova emerges as the fastest-growing dried prune exporter in the world. This became feasible due to rising supplies to Russia and Romania, which constitute the largest dried prune markets in Eastern Europe. In terms of export growth, Moldova was followed by Uzbekistan, which enjoys a significant expansion of exports to Russia and Kazakhstan.
Which Country Features the Largest Dried Prune Exports?
Chile is the leading exporter of dried prunes in the world, with the volume of exports reaching 69K tonnes, which was near 39% of total exports in 2019. It was distantly followed by the U.S. (32K tonnes), Argentina (23K tonnes), and France (11K tonnes), together creating a 37% share of total exports. Moldova (7.8K tonnes), Uzbekistan (7.3K tonnes), Serbia (3.6K tonnes) and the Netherlands (2.8K tonnes) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2007 to 2019, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried prune exports from Chile stood at +8.6%. At the same time, Moldova (+14.7%), Uzbekistan (+12.3%), Serbia (+1.8%), and the Netherlands (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2007-2019. By contrast, Argentina (-1.2%), France (-3.5%), and the U.S. (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
In value terms, the largest dried prune supplying countries worldwide were Chile ($146M), the U.S. ($126M), and Argentina ($40M), together comprising 69% of global exports (IndexBox estimates). These countries were followed by France, Uzbekistan, the Netherlands, Moldova, and Serbia, which together accounted for a further 17%.
Which Country is the Most Promising Market for Imported Dried Prune?
In 2019, Russia (18K tonnes), followed by Brazil (12K tonnes), Mexico (11K tonnes), Germany (9.8K tonnes), Poland (8.6K tonnes), Japan (8.4K tonnes), and Italy (8.3K tonnes) represented the main importers of dried prunes, together generating 43% of total imports. The UK (7.4K tonnes), Spain (7.2K tonnes), China (6.3K tonnes), Algeria (5.4K tonnes), the Netherlands (4.2K tonnes), and Canada (4K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2007 to 2019, the biggest increases were in China, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest dried prune importing markets worldwide were Germany ($36M), Russia ($30M), and Italy ($29M), together accounting for 21% of global imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Mexico, Poland, the UK, Brazil, Spain, Canada, the Netherlands, China, and Algeria, which together accounted for a further 40%.
