In 2020, in-shell groundnut exports from the U.S. rose twofold in value terms and threefold in terms of volume thanks to explosive demand from China. The total volume of exports reached $243M or 312K tonnes. China remains the key destination for groundnut supplies from the U.S., accounting for 85% of the total figure. At the same time, shipments from the U.S. constitute 97% of the Chinese peanut imports.
China remains an unrivaled leader in global chestnut consumption with a share of 81% of the total market. Chestnuts are widely used there in cooking, roasted with sugar, or for processing. The vast majority of chestnuts in China are produced domestically. Italy acts as the major importer of chestnuts worldwide, while Turkey, Portugal and France feature the highest pace of import growth.
U.S. almond exports hit a record high of approx. $1.1B in 2020, which was equal to 296K tonnes. An increase in harvested area, especially in California, led to a higher almond output that enabled to propel exports. India became the main importer of American almonds, accounting for 74% of the total export volume.
In 2021 production of pistachios in the U.S. will break previous years’ records thanks to large yields and an increase in the bearing average. This will enable an expansion of exports, primarily to the EU and China, and retaining stable prices on the domestic market. Heading into 2022, the U.S. will strengthen its position in the global market as its closest competitor, Iran, faces a lower yield that will cause it to deplete its pistachio reserves.
The global walnut estimated at approx. 2.5M tonnes on a shelled walnut basis, equating to near $17.1B. Against the pandemic background, and given the tangible rise in walnut outputs, the processing of walnuts into snack products emerges as the new driver of global walnut market growth. The market potential could be also found in the expansion of the range of nut products positioned as “healthy” food.
In 2019, global dried prune exports amounted to 178K tonnes. Chile was the largest exporter of dried prunes in the world, with the volume of exports reaching 69K tonnes, which was near 39% of total exports in 2019. Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2007-2019.
