All these countries together held near 38% share of total supplies. Austria (63K tons), Belgium (55K tons), the Czech Republic (49K tons), Romania (46K tons), Sweden (39K tons), Bulgaria (34K tons) and Denmark (29K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
In value terms, Germany ($1B) constitutes the largest market for imported chilies and peppers (green) in the EU, comprising 36% of total supplies. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($320M), with a 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.8% share.
In 2021, the annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at +6.9%. In the other countries, the rates were as follows: France (+9.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+18.0% per year).
Chilli and Pepper Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the chili and pepper import price in the EU amounted to $1,969 per ton, with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,482 per ton), while Bulgaria ($699 per ton) was amongst the lowest. In 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
EU Largest Exporters of Chilies and Green Peppers
Spain (915K tons) was the main exporter of chilies and peppers (green), making up 57% of total volume. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (448K tons), comprising a 28% share of total exports. The following exporters - France (53K tons), Belgium (40K tons) and Austria (34K tons) - together made up 7.8% of total supplies.
In value terms, Spain ($1.6B), the Netherlands ($1.2B) and France ($91M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 89% share of total exports.
