U.S. Ginger Price Fell Sharply to $1,169 per Ton in June 2022
U.S. Ginger Import Price per Ton June 2022
In June 2022, the ginger price per ton amounted to $1,169 (CIF, US), falling by -16.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,396 per ton, and then contracted notably in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was India ($3,932 per ton), while the price for China ($673 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Ginger Imports
In June 2022, supplies from abroad of ginger decreased by -0.4% to 6.8K tons, falling for the third consecutive month after three months of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 12% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 12K tons. From April 2022 to June 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ginger imports declined sharply to $7.9M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when imports increased by 6.6% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $13M in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to June 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Ginger Imports by Country
In June 2022, China (4.2K tons) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to the United States, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, ginger imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (1.1K tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Brazil (287 tons), with a 4.2% share.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -8.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Peru (-9.5% per month) and Brazil (-21.5% per month).
In value terms, China ($2.8M), Peru ($1.6M) and India ($847K) were the largest ginger suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 67% of total imports.
India, with a CAGR of +22.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
