For the fourth year in a row, the Brazilian ginger market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -87.5% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a sharp curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Ginger Production in Brazil
In value terms, ginger production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +13.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 50%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Ginger Exports
Exports from Brazil
In 2021, overseas shipments of ginger increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 169% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, ginger exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main destinations of ginger exports from Brazil, together accounting for 79% of total exports. Russia, the UK, Spain and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Spain (with a CAGR of +121.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the largest markets for ginger exported from Brazil worldwide, together accounting for 78% of total exports. These countries were followed by Argentina, Spain, the UK and Italy, which together accounted for a further 15%.
Among the main countries of destination, Spain, with a CAGR of +107.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -24.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, ginger export price increased by +18.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 75% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Russia ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ginger Imports
Imports into Brazil
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of ginger, when their volume decreased by -50.2% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, ginger imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 104%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to Brazil, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, ginger imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. Nigeria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Peru stood at +49.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-3.8% per year) and Nigeria (+3.5% per year).
In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to Brazil, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru stood at +55.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-9.8% per year) and Nigeria (-0.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average ginger import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
