Germany's Baby Food Exports Reach Record High of $1.1B in 2023

In 2023, shipments abroad of food preparations for infants increased by 28% to 105K tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, baby food exports soared to $1.1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +41.9% against 2019 indices. Exports by Country

the Netherlands (35K tons) was the main destination for baby food exports from Germany, with a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, baby food exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (16K tons), twofold. Italy (5.9K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at +54.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+20.0% per year) and Italy (+1.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($353M) remains the key foreign market for food preparations for infants exports from Germany, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($142M), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 5.7% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +30.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+46.0% per year) and France (-2.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the baby food price amounted to $10,416 per ton (FOB, Germany), rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $10,828 per ton. From 2022 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($22,561 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($4,019 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
