Frances' Exports of Wrapping Papers Decrease Sharply to $27M in October 2023

In October 2023, wrapping papers exports from France shrank markedly to 11K tons, with a decrease of -60.4% compared with the previous month. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 with an increase of 36% month-to-month.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports reduced markedly to $27M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Exports by Country

Paper; vegetable parchment, in rolls or sheets, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, bleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, unbleached sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm , kraft paper and paperboard, bleached uniformly throughout the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, weighing <= 150 g/m² , sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm, sulphite wrapping paper and paper and paperboard, coated on one or both sides with kaolin "china clay" or other inorganic substances, with or without a binder, and with no other coating, whether or not surface-coloured, surface-decorated or printed, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in sulphite wrapping paper (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, the most traded types of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in France were paper; vegetable parchment, in rolls or sheets ($7.2M), paper; glassine and other glazed transparent or translucent papers, in rolls or sheets ($6M) and paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818 ($5M), with a combined 67% share of total exports. These products were followed by paper; greaseproof papers, in rolls or sheets, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, bleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, kraft paper and paperboard, bleached uniformly throughout the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, weighing <= 150 g/m² , unbleached sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm , paper and paperboard, coated on one or both sides with kaolin "china clay" or other inorganic substances, with or without a binder, and with no other coating, whether or not surface-coloured, surface-decorated or printed, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm and sulphite wrapping paper, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Paper and paperboard; coated with inorganic substances only, whether or not surface-coloured, surface-decorated or printed, n.e.s. in heading no. 4810, in rolls or sheets, with a CAGR of +4.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

In October 2023, the wrapping papers price stood at $2,534 per ton (FOB, France), with an increase of 19% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($3,541 per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($1,007 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
