Wrapping Papers Price in Australia Grows to $727 per Ton

Australia Wrapping Papers Export Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the wrapping papers price amounted to $727 per ton (FOB, Australia), surging by 4.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $976 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to April 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($1,074 per ton), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($384 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Australia Wrapping Papers Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm ($9,637 per ton), while the average price for exports of kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 ($552 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: paper; glassine and other glazed transparent or translucent papers, in rolls or sheets (+38.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Australia Wrapping Papers Exports

In April 2023, approximately 10K tons of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard were exported from Australia; reducing by -26.5% against March 2023. Overall, total exports indicated a slight expansion from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +22.0% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when exports increased by 68% m-o-m.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports dropped markedly to $7.5M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 58% against the previous month.

Kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 (6K tons), unbleached sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm (4.2K tons) and paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818 (26 tons) were the main products of wrapping papers exports from Australia, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818 (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, unbleached sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm ($3.9M), kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, unbleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803 ($3.3M) and paper and paperboard, coated on one or both sides with kaolin "china clay" or other inorganic substances, with or without a binder, and with no other coating, whether or not surface-coloured, surface-decorated or printed, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size ($127K) were the most exported types of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard from Australia worldwide, with a combined 98% share of total exports. Kraft paper and paperboard; uncoated, bleached, weight 150g/m2 or less, in rolls or sheets, other than that of heading no. 4802 or 4803, paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818, kraft paper and paperboard, bleached uniformly throughout the mass and containing > 95% chemically processed wood fibres by weight in relation to the total fibre content, coated on one or both sides with kaolin or other inorganic substances, in rolls or in square or rectangular sheets, of any size, weighing <= 150 g/m² , paper; greaseproof papers, in rolls or sheets, sack kraft paper, uncoated, in rolls of a width > 36 cm, paper; vegetable parchment, in rolls or sheets and sulphite wrapping paper lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 1.7%.

Paper and paperboard, corrugated (with or without glued flat surface sheets), creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated, in rolls or sheets other than those of heading no. 4803 or 4818, with a CAGR of +40.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Australia Wrapping Papers Exports by Country

New Zealand (2K tons), China (1.7K tons) and Saudi Arabia (1.2K tons) were the main destinations of wrapping papers exports from Australia, together accounting for 47% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Namibia, South Korea, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 42%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +29.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wrapping papers exported from Australia were New Zealand ($1.4M), China ($1M) and Saudi Arabia ($740K), with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Namibia, which together accounted for a further 45%.

Among the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +28.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
