Australia's Mixed Fertilizer Price Bottoms at $671 per Ton

Australia Mixed Fertilizer Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the mixed fertilizer price stood at $671 per ton (CIF, Australia), stabilizing at the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 41% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,410 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to April 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,348 per ton), while the price for Morocco ($637 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Australia Mixed Fertilizer Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was mixed phosphorus and potassium (PK) fertilizers ($2,860 per ton), while the price for monoammonium phosphate (MAP) ($655 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by diammonium phosphate (+6.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Australia Mixed Fertilizer Imports

In April 2023, the amount of mixed fertilizers imported into Australia plummeted to 93K tons, with a decrease of -63.6% against the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 with an increase of 1,292% month-to-month.

In value terms, mixed fertilizer imports dropped remarkably to $62M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 807% m-o-m.

Australia Mixed Fertilizer Imports by Type

In April 2023, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) (89K tons) was the main type of mixed fertilizer supplied to Australia, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. Moreover, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers (4K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing nitrates and phosphates (143 tons), with a 0.2% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) stood at -2.0%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers (-1.1% per month) and fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing nitrates and phosphates (-16.9% per month).

In value terms, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) ($58M) constituted the largest type of mixed fertilizer supplied to Australia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers ($3.9M), with a 6.3% share of total imports. It was followed by fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing nitrates and phosphates, with a 0.4% share.

Australia Mixed Fertilizer Imports by Country

In April 2023, Morocco (49K tons) constituted the largest mixed fertilizer supplier to Australia, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, mixed fertilizer imports from Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Saudi Arabia (20K tons), twofold. China (15K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Morocco totaled -1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-10.3% per month) and China (+0.6% per month).

In value terms, Morocco ($31M) constituted the largest supplier of mixed fertilizer to Australia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($13M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 17% share.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Morocco totaled -4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-13.2% per month) and China (-1.2% per month).
