Exports in Western Africa

In 2023, shipments abroad of knives, scissors and blades decreased by X% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knife and scissors exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented the main exporters of knives, scissors and blades in 2023, resulting at approx. X% and X% of total exports, respectively. Cabo Verde (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Liberia (X units) and Mauritania (X units) - each recorded a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Mauritania (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together accounting for X% of total exports. Niger, Nigeria, Mauritania and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2023, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

Knife and scissors imports surged to X units in 2023, jumping by X% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knife and scissors imports totaled $X in 2023. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2023, Nigeria (X units) was the largest importer of knives, scissors and blades, creating X% of total imports. Guinea (X units), Benin (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Benin (X%), Senegal (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Guinea (X%) and Cote d'Ivoire (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Ghana (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Senegal, Guinea, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso increased by X, X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively.
