In 2022, the Ugandan container market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption showed perceptible growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, when their volume decreased by X% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X%. The exports peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, container exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X units) was the main destination for container exports from Uganda, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, container exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Rwanda (X units), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for container exported from Uganda were Kenya ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and South Sudan ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, when their volume increased by X% to X units. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
