Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for envelope exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, envelope exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (X% per year) and the United States (X% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for envelopes exports from Sri Lanka, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Maldives, with a X% share.

The average envelope export price stood at $X per ton in 2023, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Envelope Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2023, supplies from abroad of envelopes increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, envelope imports shrank notably to $X in 2023. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2022, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2023, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of envelope to Sri Lanka, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, envelope imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (X% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (X% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Singapore ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest envelope suppliers to Sri Lanka, together comprising X% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR, the Netherlands, the UK, Turkey, Malaysia, the United States, India, Belgium and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average envelope import price stood at $X per ton in 2023, dropping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, envelope import price increased by X% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of X%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
