In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of shelled hazelnuts, when their volume decreased by -24% to X tons. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

France (X tons) was the main destination for shelled hazelnut exports from Spain, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mexico (X tons), with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France stood at +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+4.7% per year) and Mexico (-1.8% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for shelled hazelnut exports from Spain, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Portugal ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Venezuela, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+4.5% per year) and Venezuela (-14.2% per year).

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Argentina (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Spain
In 2021, imports of shelled hazelnuts into Spain expanded sharply to X tons, picking up by 14% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports rose to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of shelled hazelnut to Spain, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. Georgia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey amounted to -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+13.2% per year) and Georgia (-0.4% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Georgia ($X) appeared to be the largest shelled hazelnut suppliers to Spain, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Germany, the Netherlands and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Germany, with a CAGR of +26.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
