Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen potatoes prepared or preserved exports, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012 to 2021. India (+7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pakistan was the major importer of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), Maldives (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together making up a 49% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved frozen potato imports into Pakistan stood at +15.9%. At the same time, Nepal (+77.6%), Bangladesh (+12.0%), Maldives (+9.8%) and Sri Lanka (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +77.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Afghanistan (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Southern Asia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Maldives, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Pakistan stood at +11.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+3.4% per year) and Maldives (+6.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 6.4% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Afghanistan ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton), while Maldives ($X per ton) and Sri Lanka ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
