The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The biggest shipments were from India (X tons), together amounting to 100% of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen potatoes prepared or preserved exports, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012 to 2021. India (+7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest preserved frozen potato supplier in Southern Asia.

In 2021, overseas purchases of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved increased by 49% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Pakistan was the major importer of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 48% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), Maldives (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Nepal (X tons), together making up a 49% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved frozen potato imports into Pakistan stood at +15.9%. At the same time, Nepal (+77.6%), Bangladesh (+12.0%), Maldives (+9.8%) and Sri Lanka (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +77.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Afghanistan (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Pakistan (+33 p.p.), Nepal (+9 p.p.), Maldives (+6.6 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Afghanistan saw its share reduced by -8.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen potatoes prepared or preserved in Southern Asia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Maldives, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Pakistan stood at +11.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+3.4% per year) and Maldives (+6.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 6.4% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Afghanistan ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton), while Maldives ($X per ton) and Sri Lanka ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
