In 2020, shipments abroad of virgin olive oil increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2017 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, virgin olive oil exports totaled $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore prevails in virgin olive oil exports structure, recording X tonnes, which was near X% of total exports in 2020. Indonesia (X tonnes), Thailand (X tonnes), Cambodia (X tonnes), Malaysia (X tonnes) and the Philippines (X tonnes) occupied a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, Cambodia (+X%), Thailand (+X%) and the Philippines (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. By contrast, Malaysia (-X%) and Indonesia (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+X p.p.), Thailand (+X p.p.) and Cambodia (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -X% and -X% from 2007 to 2020, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest virgin olive oil supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Cambodia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a X% share.

In Singapore, virgin olive oil exports expanded at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007-2020. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+X% per year) and Thailand (+X% per year).

In 2020, the virgin olive oil export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per tonne, declining by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per tonne), while Indonesia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Virgin olive oil imports contracted dramatically to X tonnes in 2020, with a decrease of -X% compared with 2019 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, virgin olive oil imports declined dramatically to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, Thailand (X tonnes), Singapore (X tonnes), the Philippines (X tonnes), Indonesia (X tonnes), Viet Nam (X tonnes) and Malaysia (X tonnes) represented the main importer of virgin olive oil in South-Eastern Asia, mixing up X% of total import.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
