Botswana (X tonnes) was the main destination for plantain exports from South Africa, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, plantain exports to Botswana exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Namibia (X tonnes), threefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Botswana stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+X% per year) and Lesotho (+X% per year).

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
Ecuador (X tonnes), Swaziland (X tonnes) and Mozambique (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of plantain imports to South Africa, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Ghana, which accounted for a further X 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Ghana (+X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plantain to South Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Swaziland ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ecuador totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Swaziland (+X% per year) and Mozambique (-X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average plantain import price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, growing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per tonne), while the price for Swaziland ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
