Cashew Nut Market Size in South Africa

For the third year in a row, the South African cashew nut market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. In value terms, cashew nut exports fell markedly to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. From 2010 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Namibia (X tonnes), Botswana (X tonnes) and Lesotho (X tonnes) were the main destinations of cashew nut exports from South Africa, together comprising X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lesotho, while exports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Botswana ($X) remains the key foreign market for cashew nut exports from South Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Namibia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Botswana amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-X% per year) and Lesotho (+X% per year).

The average cashew nut export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Namibia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lesotho, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
