Sugar Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, shipments abroad of sugar increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Denmark was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar exports, with a CAGR of -2.8% from 2012 to 2021. Sweden (-7.4%) and Finland (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Denmark (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sweden and Finland saw its share reduced by -4.8% and -8.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest sugar supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In Denmark, sugar exports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (-7.9% per year) and Finland (-17.9% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
