In 2022, shipments abroad of primary cells and batteries was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units) and Zambia (X units), together achieving a X% share of total exports. Namibia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (X%) and Zambia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (X p.p.), South Africa (X p.p.) and Zambia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (X% per year) and Botswana (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, primary cell and battery imports in SADC contracted dramatically to X units, shrinking by X% against the previous year. In general, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Tanzania (X units), together generating a X% share of total imports. Mauritius (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by X%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
