The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -6.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, granite building stone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +96.9% against 2012 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa was the major exporter of granite building stone in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+24.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. In 2021, supplies from abroad of granite building stone decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

The following importers - Mauritius (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) - each recorded an 8.5% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+20.3%), Zambia (+16.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.6%) and Mozambique (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2021. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+9.7 p.p.), Zambia (+6.3 p.p.), Mozambique (+6.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.2 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritius (-7 p.p.) and South Africa (-7.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granite building stone in SADC, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 12% share.

In South Africa, granite building stone imports declined by an average annual rate of -12.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+11.5% per year) and Mozambique (+3.7% per year).
