In 2022, the amount of granite blocks and slabs imported in SADC surged to X tons, growing by 64% compared with 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild increase. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, granite block imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 76% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons), together creating a 15% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to granite block imports into South Africa stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+35.7%), Botswana (+18.9%) and Zambia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Botswana and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +12, +4.4 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
