The SADC construction sands market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a perceptible setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, construction sands production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 48% against the previous year. In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of construction sands, when their volume decreased by -2.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 285,579%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, construction sands exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 130%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mozambique prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the construction sands exports, with a CAGR of +149.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+14.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Mozambique (+96 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -9.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) remains the largest construction sands supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Mozambique, construction sands exports increased at an average annual rate of +113.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 59,848%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-13.9%).

In 2022, the amount of construction sands imported in SADC fell notably to X tons, which is down by -20.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the largest importer of construction sands in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2022. Botswana (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (11%), Tanzania (7.1%) and Mozambique (6.4%). The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each resulted at a 5.7% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+14.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.4%), Zambia (+6.0%) and Tanzania (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-7.1%) and Mozambique (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+12 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.5 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.9 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mozambique (-3.4 p.p.), Angola (-5.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest construction sands importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Mozambique, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +12.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 87% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
