In value terms, dolomite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 159%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Namibia was the key exporter of chalk and dolomite in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dolomite exports from Namibia stood at +11.9%. At the same time, Zambia (+318.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +318.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Namibia and Zambia increased by +31 and +12 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest dolomite supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Namibia amounted to +9.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-15.3% per year) and Zambia (+176.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chalk and dolomite was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 203% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), achieving a 7.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each finished at a 12% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+37.8%), Swaziland (+30.4%) and Angola (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-7.4%) and Mauritius (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+14 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.9 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius and Namibia saw its share reduced by -6.1% and -14.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chalk and dolomite in SADC, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 9.2% share.

In South Africa, dolomite imports declined by an average annual rate of -6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+34.4% per year) and Namibia (-15.4% per year).
